We’re not sure what happened but the ‘Dales ride guide’ in C+ issue 331 that said visitors to Tour de France, Tour de Yorkshire and upcoming World Championships host town Harrogate could only find inner tubes in Halfords was ‘fake news’. Here’s the inside line on Harrogate cycle shopping from local bike and kit tester Guy Kesteven.
If you’re heading towards Harrogate up the A1, you’ll be on target to hit the massive All Terrain showroom in Wetherby. A new branch of the original West Yorkshire shop that opened 110 years ago they stock Trek, Cannondale, Giant and Cube plus all the kit you’re likely to need in serious depth.
Chevin’s Harrogate branch is a big, bright, double decker Trek, Cannondale, Whyte, Kinesis and Boardman dealer with a super keen team ready to talk you through their excellent range of inner tubes, Bontrager tubeless conversion kits and other temptations with on site parking right next to the final mile TDF and TDY run in.
12 miles north of Harrogate, just off the TDY and TDF route in Ripon, Neil and Mark have just celebrated the 15th birthday of much loved independent Moonglu. A Giant, Genesis, Ridley and Shimano specialist with a very well deserved reputation for above and beyond service, a thriving shop club and brilliant hand built wheels.
Head down the Beryl Burton cycleway and over to the other side of the (very pretty) river Nidd and you’ll find this new, super friendly family run independent just off the market place in Knaresborough.
The most ‘Harrogate’ bike shop in town, Prologue dangles the temptation of stunning high end bikes from Cervelo, Colnago, Enigma, Focus, Kinesis and Parlee plus kit from Castelli, Enve, Giro, Hunt, Le Col, Lightweight, Sidi, Silca Wahoo and other exotica alongside a workshop and massage/fitness test suite. It’s the thriving cafe with outside terrace, big screen cycling TVs and steady flow of local Pro’s being tempted off their diets by Bev’s cakes that make it a hub for the local riding scene though.
An Aladdin’s cave of cycle touring and rough stuffing bikes and equipment that the Pocklington’s have been selling for decades before it was repackaged as bike packing and gravel riding. Legendary nationwide for service as straightforwardly Yorkshire as the kit they sell. Touring and titanium are a perfect combination and we’ve tested their great value titanium machines and are big fans!
All things Specialized – including an extensive range of inner tubes, pumps and other puncture fixing kit – are displayed just a few metres past the finish line of the first stage of the 2014 TDF, the 2017 TDY (and likely the 2019 World Champs). Bike fitting and bike workshop are also on site.
