The nights are drawing in, Strictly Come Dancing is back and it’s time to dig out the bike lights again. Hello winter, my old friend. Luckily for one Cycling Plus subscriber, that stint in the rummage drawer with the stale superglue and Sellotape will be averted, as they’ll be the fortuitous winner of a brand spanking new set of CatEye bike lights for facing down and lighting up their winter rides.

First on the menu is the lean 136g CatEye AMPP 800 front light, a high-powered and rechargeable headlight boasting a mighty 800 lumens and the Japanese brand’s proprietary OptiCube lens tech for maximising visibility. Fully rechargeable via USB in 3hrs and offering a low-battery indicator, the AMPP 800 also provides side visibility to increase safety, and a mode memory function.

Those modes include High (800 lumens); Middle (400); Low (200); a Daytime HyperConstant mode (800/200); and a Flashing mode (200), with running time between 1.5 and 30 hours. The VIZ 300 rear light (47g) boasts three LEDs (300 lumens) with a focused lens for maximum performance and remains highly visible in the daytime, as well as at night.

A wide 300˚ of visibility is provided alongside a long rear beam projection, with battery life extending from three hours to a mighty 45. Again, it’s USB rechargeable and features a low-battery indicator, with the four modes: Constant; Flashing; Daytime Hyperflash and a Group Ride mode.
